Peter van Merksteijn, owner of van Merksteijn Motorsport, is a versatile racing driver. The start of his rally career dates back to 1985 when he started in the sport driving a Volkswagen Golf. Up until 1996 he has taken part in various rounds of the Dutch Championship and many rally events throughout Europe. After a switch to circuit racing from 1996 until 2005 the entrepreneur found his way back to rallying in 2007 after his son picked up the sport in that same year.

Driving a Ford Focus WRC, Peter van Merksteijn made his comeback in the sport during the 2007 Eifel Rallye followed by his WRC debut in the Rallye Deutschland. Since then he has competed in a total of 10 WRC rallies with a best result of 20th position during the 2009 Rally Norway.

Besides his WRC entries Peter has also ventured to other motorsports these last few years. In 2008 Peter van Merksteijn took part in the 24 hours of Le Mans with the Porsche RS Spyder winning the LMP2 class. In 2009 Peter started together with Eddy Chevaillier in the Dakar Rally with a BMW X3CC only to retire during the fifth day while driving in 12th position.
